Paralegal Continuing Education Modules

The Fall 2009 semester offers Real Estate Law for Paralegals and Corporate Law.  Click on the title link below for the fee, dates, time, and place and to register for the module.

  • Family Law for Connecticut Paralegals
In this 4-day session, you will be able to confidently initiate, diary, docket and steer your office’s domestic cases to an equitable conclusion while managing client needs. Family Law conflicts are of a necessarily personal nature and client satisfaction depends upon your office’s ability to move clients through the court system with sensitivity and professionalism.

  • Corporate Law
The Corporate Law module for paralegals covers the basics of Connecticut business entities, how they are legally created, run and dissolved. Students will learn the typical functioning, legal conflicts and litigation that arise from the day-to-day business operations of the entities and the responsibilities of their participants.

  • Law Office Management
This 4-day, comprehensive module covers the administration of both the business and practice aspects of the law office. You will learn about managing law office personnel, office-client relations, billing, accounting, marketing, technology, management and administrative concepts, and systems for creating professional, standardized documents. Because the law office and its staff must at all times be concerned with maintaining standards of ethics and professionalism, classroom work will include analysis of case studies, group projects, and role-plying. Although this course is designed for future law office managers, it would be helpful to all students seeking to define their unique and crucial roles in today’s law office and as part of a legal team.

  • Professional Development and Career Options
This one-day workshop is designed for paralegals currently in the field, as well as individuals interested in legal assisting as a career. Sharpen your interviewing skills, gain tips and techniques for effective resume writing, and learn how to enhance your professional image. Information will be provided on new emerging trends in the legal assisting field, including exciting and surprising career options for paralegals.

  • Real Estate Law
In this 4-day session, you’ll immerse yourself in the practical nuts and bolts of real property laws and learn closings from the inside out. Learn the laws governing real property transactions, zoning and building codes, real estate contracts and more. Internet resources and other current support technology will be explored.

  • Trusts and Estates Law
Survey the estate planning tools involved in Connecticut trusts and estates practice in this four-day (two weekend) course. Learn the issues involved and key language for drafting wills, trust, living wills and powers of attorney. Develop an awareness of how all such documents and the planning involved must be created with reference to other overlapping areas of law such as taxation, entitlements and money management.

Module Requirements for Successful Completion
Students must pass a final exam and complete one written assignment. In addition, 100% attendance is mandatory. Failure to meet these requirements will result in an incomplete or failing grade.

Textbooks for Modules
Textbooks should be purchased at the UConn Co-op bookstore. Information will accompany your enrollment confirmation.

Refund Policy
Cancellations made before the start of the program will receive a full refund minus a $35 processing fee. Cancellations received after the first weekend will receive no refund.
