Join Forces for Good co-author, Leslie Crutchfield and  George Mason University professor, Alan Abramson, as they engage the audience in a discussion of the national trends occuring within the U.S. nonprofit sector, the implications for Connecticut and how the six practices of high-impact nonprofits, outlined in Forces for Good, can influence social policy and action in Connecticut's nonprofit sector.

Presenters

Alan AbramsonAlan Abramson is Professor of Public and International Affairs at George Mason University, and Senior Fellow of the Aspen Institute’s Nonprofit Sector and Philanthropy Program. Alan directed the Aspen Institute’s Nonprofit Sector and Philanthropy Program for 13 years, before recently accepting the professorship at George Mason. As Director of the Nonprofit Sector and Philanthropy Program at the Aspen Institute he oversaw the Nonprofit Sector Research Fund and a variety of other research and leadership initiatives focused on critical nonprofit issues. Before joining the Aspen Institute in 1994, Alan Abramson was on the research staff of the Urban Institute. Alan has served on many nonprofit boards and advisory committees, and is currently a member of the boards of the National Council of Nonprofit Associations (NCNA), the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington, and NPower of the Greater DC Region. He has also taught on an adjunct basis at Georgetown, George Washington, and Johns Hopkins Universities.  Alan Abramson received his Ph.D. in political science from Yale University and his B.A. from Wesleyan University. He is the author and co-author of numerous books and papers, and his work has twice won awards from the American Political Science Association. Alan has also been named among the 50 most influential leaders in the nonprofit sector by the NonProfit Times, one of the leading trade publications for the nonprofit sector.

Leslie CrutchfieldLeslie Crutchfield, co-author of Forces for Good, is a managing director of Ashoka, a research grantee of The Aspen Institute’s Nonprofit Sector and Philanthropy Program, and a philanthropic advisor to foundations and high net worth individuals. She manages Ashoka’s recently-launched Global Academy program, whose members include the “global greats” of social entrepreneurship such as Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus. Leslie co-founded Who Cares: The Tool Kit for Social Change, a national magazine for young activists published from 1993 – 1999 (circ. 50,000). Leslie has lectured at Harvard and Stanford’s business schools, and has presented at numerous industry conferences on social entrepreneurship, international development, high-impact philanthropy, and women’s leadership. She has been featured as one of America’s top leaders under 40 by Newsweek and Self, has appeared in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times as well as on NPR and PBS and other media. She volunteered with Crossroads Africa in the Gambia, and serves on the board of the SEED Foundation in Washington, D.C. She holds an MBA and an AB from Harvard University, and resides in Washington, D.C. with her husband and two children.
