Associate in Reinsurance (ARe)

The ARe designation is a 5-part series consisting of:

  • ARe 143,
  • ARe 144,
  • ARe 145,
  • CPCU 520 and
  • one elective from either CPCU 540, ARM 56 or AIAF 111. 

Are 143 – Primary Insurance Coverages
This is one of four required courses in the 5-part ARe program.  ARe 143 focuses on primary insurance and how it works.  Topics include: Overview of Personal Insurance, Personal Auto, Homeowners Insurance, Misc. Personal Insurance Coverages, Commercial Property Insurance, Business Income Insurance, Inland and Ocean Marine, Commercial General Liability,Commercial Auto, and Workers Compensation/Employer's Liability Insurance.

ARe 144 - Reinsurance Principles and Practices
This is one of four required courses in the 5-part Are program. ARe 144 covers the following topics:  types of reinsurance, reinsurance program design, the reinsurance placement process, common reinsurance treaty clauses, quota and surplus share treaties, property and casualty excess of loss treaties, catastrophe reinsurance, and aggregate excess of loss treaties.  Also discussed are reinsurance audits, regulation, reserves, and reinsurance aspects of the NAIC Annual Statement. 

The other 2 required courses in the ARe program are:

ARe 145 – Readings in Reinsurance Issues and Developments (an on line course)

CPCU 520 – Insurance Operations and Regulation

For the 5th course in the ARe program, students can select an elective from the following following list.

CPCU 540 – Business and Financial Analysis or Risk Management and Insurance Professionals

ARM 56  - Risk Financing

AICF 111 – Statutory Accounting for Property-Casualty Insurers
