Associate in Claims (AIC)

The AIC designation can now be achieved in several ways. AIC 33 and AIC 36 are required core courses. However, the other two courses can be combined with other insurance courses to reflect certain types of business paths:

  • Personal Insurance Auto and Liability:   AIC 33, 24, 36 plus either CPCU 553 or 555 or INS 22
  • Personal Insurance Homeowners:  AIC 33, 35, 36 plus either CPCU 553 or 555 or INS 22
  • Commercial Insurance Liability:  AIC 33,34,36 and CPCU 552
  • Commercial Insurance Property:  AIC 33,35,36 and CPCU 551

AIC 33 – Claims Handling Principles and Practices
This is the foundation course for AIC and required for all tracks leading to the AIC designation. Topics covered are: insurance and the claim representative’s role, the claim process, human relation in claims, communication, negotiation, insurance fraud, law and the legal system, bad faith and defending bad faith claims, promoting good faith, claim management, professionalism, quality claim practices and ethics.

AIC 34 – Workers Compensation and Managing Bodily Injury Claims
This course covers the Workers Compensation System: covered employments and injuries, compensability, benefits, claims administration and issues in Workers Compensation. The course also covers managing bodily injury claims, injury and treatment evaluation, impairment and disability, rehabilitation, low back pain claims, knee injuries, psychological injuries, and the medical investigation process including investigation of injury causation and assessing treatments.

AIC 35 – Property Loss Adjusting
This course focuses on property loss adjusting practices. Topics covered include persons and property insured, cause of loss, amount of recovery, duties following loss and appraisal, coverage defenses, loss adjusting procedures, catastrophes and preparation of estimates. The various kinds of property losses are examined in detail: residential construction losses and estimates, merchandise losses, time element losses and specialty losses.

AIC 36 – Liability Claim Practices
This course focuses on liability claim practices including coverage issues, determining legal liability, investigation, evaluation, and settlement. The course also includes managing litigation and an analysis of auto liability, premises liability and product liability.
