School Nurse Emergency Medical Services
for Children Program

A program of UConn's Center for Continuing Studies in cooperation with UConn's School of Nursing

Program Overview
The purpose of the SNEMS-C program* is to reduce morbidity and mortality in children and youths who are injured or become ill at school. This three-day workshop will be presented by a team of instructors and includes lectures, slides, an assessment demonstration, triage and critical problem-solving scenarios with emergency medical services personnel. Upon completion of the SNEMS-C program, school nurses should be able to:

  • Use prioritized assessment skills recognized by EMS-C,
  • Provide a level of pre-hospital care that conforms with EMS-C protocols,
  • Develop a comprehensive school emergency plan with their schools and communities,
  • Develop specific intervention strategies for students with special health needs and
  • Collect and analyze data on school-related injuries to improve student health.

Eligible participants
This course is offered to school nurses (full- or part-time) or substitutes who are registered professional nurses. Registration is limited to 40 participants and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Please Note: LPNs are not eligible to take this course.

Continuing Education Contact Hours
This program is approved for 18.33 Nursing Continuing Education Contact Hours. UConn School of Nursing is an Approved Provider of Continuing Nursing Education by the Connecticut Nurses' Association, an Accredited Approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. Alternatively, certain nursing educators may qualify to receive 1.8 State of Connecticut, Department of Education CEUs. If you desire CEUs, please consult with program staff at sign-in.

Fee: TBD (includes a manual for school nurses on emergency care in schools, refreshments, lunch and parking; dinner and accommodations are not included.)
