CCS Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary!
Join the Celebration!
November 18th, 2010

CCS 50th AnniversaryThe Center of Continuing Studies (CCS) at the University of Connecticut is celebrating 50 years of providing quality programs that extend UConn's academic resources throughout the state and beyond. The legacy began in fall 1960 when the University merged five divisions--Conferences, Institutes, and Noncredit Extension; Summer Sessions and Credit Extension; the Institute of Gerontology; the Institute of Public Service, and the Labor Education Center --into Continuing Education Services.

Please join us for light refreshments and festivities to celebrate this milestone. November 18, 2010, 3-5 p.m. Bishop Center, University of Connecticut, One Bishop Circle, Storrs, CT 06269-4056.

Since its inception, the Center of Continuing Studies has served more than two million students with degree programs, non-credit professional development programs, fine arts classes for all ages, and cross cultural learning experiences for individuals around the globe. A total of 6261 students have earned an undergraduate Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) degree since that program began in 1977. Another 83 students have earned a graduate Master of Professional Studies (MPS) degree since CCS launched that program in 2003.

Where Dreams Continue is the theme of the 50th anniversary celebration, which will be held at the Bishop Center in Storrs, CT from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on November 18, 2010. Dr. Douglas Cooper, UConn Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Regional Campuses, will be on hand to welcome guests and Dr. Peter J. Nicholls, UConn Provost & Executive Vice President, will deliver remarks (via video) from China.

Dr. Judy Ashcroft, Dean of Continuing and Innovative Education at the University of Texas-Austin and President of the University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA), will deliver the keynote address. Dr. Ashcroft will discuss the importance of continuing studies to individuals, the University, nation, and world, and how continuing studies units are best positioned to address the changes and challenges the future will bring.

CCS Director Dr. Susan Nesbitt will announce a new annual award and present the award to an undergraduate degree completion student. Dr. Maxine Lentz, CCS Director of Degree Completion Programs, will introduce the 50 for 50 Fundraising Campaign for CCS student scholarships.

The CSA Faculty Jazz Band will add to the festivities with music from the American Songbook and jazz standards. Led by CSA Director and trombonist, Topher Logan, the band includes teaching artists from CSA and UConn's summer Jazz Workshop: Dr. Rex Cadwallader on piano; Mike Asetta on bass; Joseph Axiak on vibraphone; and Arti Dixson on drums.
