Anthony Joseph, Professor
Dr. Anthony J. Joseph is a member of the faculty at the Center for Continuing Studies, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate online Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) courses and is the coordinator of the BGS Online focus in OSH and the Master of Professional Studies with a focus in Occupational Safety and Health Management (MPS/OSHM).
Prior to joining CCS in Fall 2004, Dr. Joseph spent 11 years as a professor in the Safety Sciences Department at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He taught face-to-face OSH classes, pioneered the push at that institution to get those classes online and later taught in the online format.
Teaching online courses at the University of Connecticut appeals to Dr. Joseph for a number of reasons.
“First, I love technology – the use of distance education technology and the technology support within the system,” he says. “It was an opportunity to work with adult students and I liked the global, international aspect which provides an opportunity to communicate with people all over the world in real time. Online teaching allows people to be more open; there’s more control; and people can share more information.”
Born in Trinidad, Dr. Joseph loves to travel and has lived all over the world. A Civil Engineer by profession, he began teaching part time in 1979 and full time in 1989. He chose the field of Occupational Safety and Health because “It’s a science as well as a humanitarian thing,” he says. “It combines the ability to help people and allows me to use my engineering knowledge to develop interventions – which is critical to me.”
Dr. Joseph has a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad; an M.S. in Safety Sciences, Indiana University of Pennsylvania; an M.S. in Environmental Pollution Control, University of Leeds, Leeds, England; and a B.S. in Natural Sciences, University of the West Indies, Trinidad. |
