Admission Information

Admission Requirements
Applicants seeking admission to the Master of Professional Studies program should follow the application guidelines outlined in the graduate UConn catalog at www.grad.uconn.edu.

Online application forms can also be found on that web site.

Admission decisions are based upon a number of criteria, each designed to measure the applicant’s ability to succeed in the MPS program.

No application can be evaluated without all the required documentation:

  • All applicants must have completed a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • An official college transcript must be submitted showing a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average, or a GPA greater than 3.0 for the last two years of study.
  • GRE is not required.
  • A personal statement from the applicant addressing his/her reasons for applying and his/her plans for the future.
  • Three letters of reference from faculty or others who can address the candidate’s potential for success.
  • If not a native speaker of English, a TOEFL score of at least 550 for the paper-based version and at least 213 for the computer-based version.
  • Two years relevant work experience is highly desirable.
  • Human Resource Management applicants: Applicants must submit a 10-page writing sample; citations should follow the format outlined by the American Psychological Association (APA). For additional details, email Dr. Peter Diplock at peter.diplock@uconn.edu.

The MPS program requires a minimum of 36 graduate-level credit hours that include 30 credit hours of course work and 6 credit hours for a Capstone Project completed toward the end of the program. The MPS also includes an issues-based residency requirement.

Applications are evaluated as soon as the student’s file is complete. Applicants will be notified shortly after the admissions committee has made its decision.

New students can start the program at the beginning of any semester during the year:

  • Fall Semester, end of August

(Please note: The Homeland Security MPS Program is only open for Fall admission.)

  • Spring Semester, mid-January

  • Summer Session, beginning mid-May

Applicants are encouraged to apply well in advance of intended matriculation. Applications received less than eight weeks before the start of a semester may not be reviewed in time for enrollment in that semester.

If you have applied for admission to the MPS degree program, but have not yet been officially admitted, you may register for a course as a non-degree student.

Note: The Master of Professional Studies with a field of study in Homeland Security Leadership is a cohort-based program. The courses are only open to students who are matriculated in the homeland security field of study. At the present time, the MPS/HSL courses are not open to Non-degree students

Please consult with your faculty advisor prior to registering to ensure that the course will apply towards your degree.

Check with your employer about tuition reimbursement.
