Center for Continuing Studies Online Course Development Compensation Plan
Center for Continuing Studies Faculty:
CCS faculty will have online credit course development counted on a one to one ratio for teaching a credit course. CCS faculty will have online non-credit course development counted on a one to one ratio for the equivalent non-credit work. For special programs that meet market need and exceed the faculty members regular workload, the faculty member may be compensated on an overload basis with prior approval of the dean.
CCS faculty teach online courses as part of their regular workload.
CCS faculty retain the intellectual property rights to their content, but the courses are owned by CCS and the University. There is no personal profit sharing for online courses.
University of Connecticut Full-Time Faculty:
CCS will work with the dean or his/her designee of the school or college to determine the appropriate mode of compensation to non-CCS UConn faculty. There are a number of possible methods for compensation for developing and teaching online courses. They include:
- The department/school allowing released time to develop/teach an online course. CCS pays for an adjunct to cover the course(s) the faculty would normally have taught.
- The department/school allows released time to develop/teach an online course. CCS pays the department the equivalent of an adjunct salary for the faculty’s released time. The department covers any lost courses internally.
- The department/school recommends that the faculty develop/teach the course during the summer. CCS pays adjunct rate for development. CCS pays summer compensation rate for summer teaching.
- The department/school recommends that the faculty develop/teach the course during the academic year as overload. CCS will follow University Academic Year Overload and Extra Compensation policies. CCS pays adjunct rate for development and/or teaching
- When online courses exceed 40 students, CCS will pay the department for a teaching assistant to assist the faculty member.
University of Connecticut Adjunct Faculty:
CCS will pay adjunct faculty for developing and teaching online courses at the standard adjunct rate approved by the AAUP. Adjunct faculty retain the rights to their intellectual property; the online course, however, is owned by the University of Connecticut.
