Overview of Workshop
 

This workshop will be led by the woodwind faculty at the University of Connecticut and will assist high school woodwind music students in preparing for the CMEA Regional and All-State Auditions held in the fall.  The CMEA 2007-2008 Regional and All-State Repertoire is available for your review.

Activities will include:

  • Master classes for the etude/solo repertoire
  • Sight-reading clinic
  • Scales clinic
  • Faculty concert featuring UConn woodwind faculty

Curt Blood, clarinet, is a lecturer in music, teaching clarinet at UConn. He has been principal clarinet with the Hartford Symphony since 1982 and has performed with the Harkness Festival Orchestra since 1988. Mr. Blood is a graduate with distinction of the New England Conservatory with a Bachelor’s degree in music and was the recipient of a Tanglewood fellowship. He has performed under the baton of Leonard Bernstein, Kurt Masur and Seiji Ozawa.

Greg Case, saxophone, has served as the instructor of saxophone at the University of Connecticut since 2003, where he teaches applied study in classical and jazz saxophone. He is the co-principal saxophonist of the United States Coast Guard Band. He has been a featured soloist with the Band on numerous occasions throughout the country. He is also a founding member of the Element Saxophone Quartet, winning medals at both the 2004 and 2006 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. He performs with the Hartford Jazz Orchestra and the Goodspeed Opera Company. Mr. Case holds a Master of Arts in jazz studies from New York University and a Bachelor of Music in classical saxophone performance from Indiana University.

Nancy Dimock, oboe, regularly performs throughout the northeast as a member of the Vermont Symphony, Albany Symphony, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra and as a guest with the Boston Lyric Opera, Portland Symphony, Rhode Island Philharmonic and the Boston Pops. She has been the principal oboist of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra and can be heard performing with the HSO on the Grammy nominated compact disc Rosemary Clooney: The Final Concert. She has recorded for Concord, Albany and Chandos records.

Ronald Haroutunian, bassoon, attended New England Conservatory of Music, and Boston University, has been a member of the Springfield (MA) Symphony Orchestra, and served as Principal Bassoon with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra during the 1986-87 season. He currently performs as Principal Bassoon with the Rhode Island Philharmonic and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. He has been a soloist with the Boston Pops, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, and Hartford Symphony. He teaches bassoon at Tufts University, Boston University, and University of Connecticut. He has recorded on Phillips, Sony, Koch, and other labels.

Barbara Hopkins, flute, has been assistant principal flutist with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra since 1993, where she has appeared as soloist on both flute and piccolo. She has released two solo CD’s, Telemann Methodical Sonatas, Vol. 1 and Short Concert Pieces for Flute and Piano. She has performed at National Flute Association conventions in Seattle, Phoenix, Atlanta, and Dallas, once as the first prize winner of the Orchestral Audition competition, and twice as the winner of the Convention Performers Competition. She has also been a top prize winner in the New York Flute Club Young Artist Competition and was awarded a fellowship to Tanglewood Music Center, where she had the honor of playing principal flute under Leonard Bernstein. She received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, her Master of Music from The Mannes College of Music, and her Bachelor of Music at The Hartt School.
