In this oldest known method for firing pottery, pots are placed in a pit in the ground with combustable materials and minerals.  The pit is set on fire and tended until the fuel is consumed and the pit has reached a temperature of approximately 2000F.  The pots are removed when cool and cleaned to reveal dynamic (and often crusty) smoke and metal oxide patterns.
Students will participate in an initial 2 hour class with pot demos and then be given time to construct pots on their own during monitored studio hours.  In the second class, students will help load the pit and tend the firing. In the third class, participants can help unload the pit and clean their pots. A potluck picnic will be encouraged!
