Alexander Technique

Explore the body and mind connection with the aid of London Certified Alexander Technique Instructor (1981) Elizabeth Huebner. Learn to focus your mind and use your body as a unified whole. Everything we do is limited or enabled by our body's ability to follow the ideas of the mind. Learn to use and enjoy your body. Master its power, grace, ease and intelligence.

The Alexander Technique (AT):

  • is a simple, practical method that teaches one how to redirect unnecessary tension into useful energy;
  • provides a way to recognize and eliminate unwanted patterns of behavior and movement, and has helped people in widely divergent fields - sports, the performing arts, medicine, manual work and other professions;
  • offers a poised way of moving in everyday and specialized activities through the exploration and experience of centered and grounded movement;
  • identifies and releases habits that take one out of balance, promoting comfort and ease of movement, the exhilaration of being outside of habit, and the freedom to breathe deeply;
  • teaches a process of exploration and discovery, which each student then continues in class and on their own - students are encouraged to see AT as a lifelong pursuit.

Classes

Each session is unique and is appropriate for beginners or long time practioners. Classes are limited in size so that each student can have some individual attention each class. Bring a mat and wear loose fitting clothing. Classes meet on Wednesdays.

Fall Session I  Begins September 12

Find support for good posture and freedom of movement. Discover how you were designed to move. What is good posture? It may not be what your mom always told you! Some parts of your body should support you while other parts should move you through space and perform tasks. Learn to use your body effectively. Schedule #AW 1011

Fall Session II  Begins November 7

Get support for sitting and walking. Sitting takes stamina. Learn how to sit well at your desk, in your car or watching television. Optimize the health benefits of walking by improving your frame. Walk naturally upright with relaxed shoulders and flexible legs. Schedule #AW 1012

Spring Session I  Begins January 30

Breathing coordination and speaking. The body needs oxygen to live. Learn to bring in air and expel air effectively and breathe with greater effectiveness. There is a right and wrong way to breathe. Learn exercises to develop movement of the diaphragm and improve exchange of air. Use this breath flow to fuel sound from speaking to singing. Schedule #AW 1011

Spring Session II  Begins March 19

Improve your performance by improving your coordination. All of us perform everyday whether it is convincing our child to wear a coat, teaching a lesson in class, or performing as an actor or musician. Learn to bring out the best in yourself. Enjoy the physical rigors of life with a body that is in tune and agile. Schedule #AW 1012

Please register early. See the current semester class schedule for further information.
