SCHOLARSHIPSEach year, trade unionists across the state have the opportunity to enter three scholarship competitions, each of which covers the tuition of the summer school. Applications for scholarships must be postmarked no later than April 15, 2009. The topic this year is "Why I want to receive this scholarship, how it will benefit the Union and how I will use it". Send your essay to the Labor Education Center by April 15th. In order to be selected for a scholarship, you must compose a winning essay of about 500 words. The scholarships available are: The Betty L. Tianti Scholarship, The John Driscoll Scholarship and the Robert Kanter Memorial Scholarship. If you are interested in applying for any of the scholarships, or wish more information on the Summer School, contact the Labor Education Center. Betty was a committed supporter not only of the rights of workers, but access to education for everyone. This fund was established so that her commitment and successes could be remembered by labor leaders just beginning their careers. The winner of this scholarship can apply the funds to any UConn class, including the summer school. Applicants must be a union steward. John was not only the chair of the Labor Education Center Advisory Committee for many years, he was also completely committed to educating rank and file members as well as officers of unions across the state. His involvement with and commitment to UConn was recognized when he received an honorary doctorate and will be memorialized in perpetuity with this scholarship. The winner of this scholarship attends the summer school without charge. Applicants must be a union steward. Robert Kanter Memorial Scholarship Bob was a long time faculty member who came with a rich background in the early struggles of the United Auto Workers. Working closely with the Reuther brothers, Robert became an expert in a number of areas including time study and the sociology of work. Following his death, this fund was set in place as a way of memorializing his commitment to bettering the condition of workers everywhere. The winner of this scholarship attends the summer school without charge. Applicants must be a member of a Connecticut local union.
