Admissions

The Bachelor of General Studies degree program (BGS) is designed to provide you with the education that meets your academic and career goals. Your BGS academic advisor will meet one-on-one with you during your academic career, from pre-admission through graduation.

Qualifications
To qualify for the BGS program, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Have an associate’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university (if you are a recent graduate from a Connecticut Community College, you are guaranteed admission into the BGS program);
  • Or have completed at least 60 credits from one or more regionally accredited colleges or universities;
  • Or have completed at least 60 credits in another school or college at the University of Connecticut. A school change form is available from your BGS advisor.

  • Special Information for Recent CT Community College Graduates
    A partnership between UConn and Connecticut's Community College system, Community Educational Pathway, or CEP, offers Community College graduates with an Associate’s Degree access to BGS.
    Starting with the Class of 2000, individuals with an Associate’s Degree from a Connecticut Community College are guaranteed admission to UConn’s BGS program.

    UConn's BGS program guarantees that you will enter with junior status. The course credits that were applied to your Associate's Degree will be evaluated for transfer toward your BGS degree.

If you are currently a Connecticut Community College student:

  • You are welcome to contact a BGS advisor at any point, to discuss how your current educational choices can help you move forward toward a Bachelor's Degree later on.
  • If you would like to apply to the CEP program, please see your Community College counselor.
  • During your last semester as a Community College student, you can apply to the BGS program at the campus of your choice.

Pre-Application Interview
Before you submit a formal application to the program, we would like to learn more about you. Therefore, your first step is to have a personal interview with a BGS advisor at the campus you would like to attend.

  • An interview is required before an application can be processed.
  • At some campuses, you will also be required to attend an information session prior to the interview.

Applying to the Program
To apply to the program, you must:

  • Complete our Application Form, either online, or using the paper form given you by the BGS advisor’s office.
  • Submit a $95.00 Application Fee, made payable to the University of Connecticut, which is required with your BGS application, unless you are a recent Connecticut Community College graduate who meets the specified criteria.
  • Request official transcripts from all regionally accredited colleges and universities previously attended are required as well, and should have them mailed directly to the BGS office at the campus you wish to attend.
  • Request that your official high school transcript be mailed directly to the BGS office at the campus you wish to attend.
  • Familiarize yourself with BGS Degree Requirements and other information in the BGS Handbook.

Special Information for International Students
In addition to meeting the admissions requirements outlined above, all international students must satisfy the Minimum English Language Requirement and attend an international student orientation at the beginning of the semester they are admitted.
