Grades, Transcripts and CEUs
Grading System, Class Grades and Grade Points

Instructors are required to file with the University Registrar grades for all classes a student takes for academic credit. While instructors are free to set the standard of performance they expect in their classes, a uniform scale is published to encourage general agreement on the meaning of grades.

Letter grades with a numeric value are given for all classes at the University of Connecticut. They are:

A = 4.0
A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3
B = 3.0
B- = 2.7
C+ = 2.3
C = 2.0
C- = 1.7
D+ = 1.3
D = 1.0
D- = 0.7
F = 0
S = 0
U = 0
W = 0
spacer
A grade of A+ with a value of 4.3 is possible in graduate level classes only. A, B, C and D are passing grades. In graduate classes, the marks of S for Satisfactory and U for Unsatisfactory may be given in place of letter grades in selected classes.

Obtain Final Grades

All students, including non-UConn or non-degree students, receive their final grades by logging onto the University’s online Student Administration System. Grades are posted by the end of the fourth day following completion of the final exam period for the term.

A non-degree student is expected to complete all course requirements.

  • A final exam may be given in a graduate level course, at the instructor’s discretion.
  • A final exam is required in all undergraduate courses. If unable to take a final exam at the scheduled time, the student should seek advance permission. Ordinarily a non-degree student is expected to complete all course requirements no later than the third week of the following semester.

Final examination information for undergraduate courses is listed below according to campus.

Avery Point
Each undergraduate class has a final examination. A final exam schedule is available from the campus registrar’s office or can be viewed at http://www.averypoint.uconn.edu/avery_point/exams.htm. The schedule of final exams is subject to change. The exam schedule is organized so that conflicts between exams for regularly scheduled courses should not ordinarily occur.

Students who find they have conflicts between scheduled exams should bring the problem to the attention of the Director of Student Affairs who will arrange a mutually acceptable revised schedule for students involved.

Absence from a final exam, except for extenuating circumstances, results in a failing grade for the exam. IMPORTANT: A student who is absent from a final exam may have a later opportunity to take a remake without penalty provided that the absence was for grave cause (e.g., accident or illness) and is approved by the Director of Student Affairs. Any student who misses an exam is advised to contact the Director of Students Affairs as soon as possible. Instructors are advised not to arrange for make-up exams unless special permission has been provided in writing by the Director of Student Affairs.

A non-degree student who is unable to complete all requirements by the conclusion of a course and who is permitted to reschedule a final exam ordinarily should complete all course requirements no later than the third week of the following semester.

All final exams will be held in the same room in which the class normally meets, unless other arrangements have been made by the instructor.

Hartford
Each undergraduate class has a final examination. The final exam schedule should be obtained from the campus registrar’s office near the end of the semester. The exam schedule is organized so that conflicts between exams for regularly scheduled classes should not ordinarily occur.

Students who find they have conflicts between scheduled exams must receive excused absence consents from the Assistant to the Dean of Student Affairs, at 860-570-9232.

Absence from a final exam, except for extenuating circumstances, results in a failing grade for the exam. Students absent from an exam for extenuating circumstances must see the class instructor and the Assistant to the Dean of Student Affairs, to request permission to take the missed exam. Permission must be sought at the earliest opportunity during the exam period, and should be accompanied with medical certification of the circumstances whenever possible.

Classes that meet in the late afternoon or evening will hold exams during the last regular class meeting prior to the start of the examination period.

Stamford
Each undergraduate class has a final examination. Information regarding scheduling of final exams will be distributed by individual instructors.

Students who find they have conflicts between scheduled exams should bring the problem to the attention of the class instructor and a Center for Continuing Studies Non-Degree academic advisor who will arrange a mutually acceptable revised schedule for those involved.

Absence from a final exam, except for grave and substantiated reasons, will result in a failing grade for the final exam. Degree students absent from a final exam for such reasons must obtain permission from the Director or his/her delegate to take a delayed exam. Non-degree or BGS students absent from a final exam for such reasons must obtain permission from a Center for Continuing Studies Non-Degree academic advisor (203-251-8550) to take a delayed exam. Permission must be sought at the earliest opportunity during the examination period, and should be accompanied by medical or other certification of the circumstances.

A non-degree student who is unable to complete all requirements by the conclusion of a course and who is permitted to reschedule a final exam ordinarily should complete all course requirements no later than the third week of the following semester.

The exam schedule is organized so that conflicts between exams for regularly scheduled classes should not ordinarily occur.

Students may reschedule a final exam if they have three exams in one day, or four exams in two consecutive days, or three exams in consecutive time blocks spanning parts of two consecutive days.

Absence from a final exam, except for extenuating circumstances, results in a failing grade for the exam. To reschedule, students must receive WRITTEN permission from both the instructor and either the campus Director or Judy DiLaurenzio. Permission forms are in the Business Office and must be completed BEFORE exam week begins, and accompanied with medical certification of the circumstances whenever possible.

A non-degree student who is unable to complete all requirements by the conclusion of a course and who is permitted to reschedule a final exam ordinarily should complete all course requirements no later than the third week of the following semester.

Access to Student Records/Grades

Online Access

Non-Degree Students have online access to Student Records for all functions except registering for classes. You may:

  • view and print your class schedule, final grades and unofficial transcript,
  • review your financial account and any holds placed on your record,
  • update your personal information--it is your responsibility to keep your personal address, telephone number and other online biographical data current,
  • view the Course Catalog and Schedule of Classes,
  • plus take advantage of several other features.

Important: You must use the Online Student Administration System to obtain your final grades. Final grades are no longer mailed to Non-Degree Students. The only restriction is that you may not add, drop or swap courses through this system; these will continue to be submitted to the Center for Continuing Studies, or to the registrar’s office at a regional campus.

There are two pieces of information you need in order to fully access the online resources available to you as a UConn student:

  • Student ID Number: When you are registered as a Non-Degree student at UConn, you are assigned a Student ID Number which allows you access to several functions in our Online Student Administration System.
  • NetID: You will also be assigned a NetID, which is your unique computer account that allows access to HuskyMail (the official UConn student email system) and WebCT (UConn’s online course delivery tool).

For more information and instructions on these important services, see the New Student Technology Tutorial. Note: The University reserves the right to communicate official business matters to students exclusively by HuskyMail. Therefore, you should check your UConn email account often.

To access the Online Student Administration System as a non-degree student

  1. From the UConn home page (www.uconn.edu), click on “Current Students,” and then the “PeopleSoft” radio button under “Student Login System.”
  2. Your Student ID Number, also called your User ID, will appear directly beneath your name on the printed Class Schedule that you will be given or will be mailed to you following registration. Your assigned Student ID Number is permanent. You will be able to access your University information in the future even if you are not registered for any courses. Please include this number when you submit any future requests to register, or if you later apply for admission to a degree program.
  3. Your initial Password is the letter “W” (upper case) followed by your six-digit birth date in MMDDYY order. For example, someone born on March 14, 1975 would have a Password of “W031475.” For security reasons, we strongly recommend that you change your password after the first time you login.
  4. Click on “Students,” and make your selection.

Detailed instructions for all the functions available, including signing in and changing your password, are contained in the New Student Technology Tutorial.

Teacher Certification and CEUs

Teachers with the Professional Educator Certificate seeking CEUs for state certification requirements should note that academic credit courses do not automatically convert to the CEUs required for continuation of the teaching certificate.

A teacher wishing to use an undergraduate credit course toward the CEU requirements should make arrangements for "CEU Equivalent Credit" for the course via his or her own employing board of education before taking the academic credit course.

Graduate credit courses completed successfully (as evidenced by an official University of Connecticut transcript) may be used for the purpose of continuing the Professional Educator Certificate. One graduate credit represents 15 contact hours (3 graduate credits equal 45 contact hours). No prior arrangements with the employing board of education are necessary.
